I missed the match and therefore I could not provide my experience. But I heard the match was hot enough to cheer the crowd.
In a prelude to Monday’s Nehru Cup final, Syria’s reserve team got the better of India’s second XI 1-0 in the last round-robin match of the competition.
With both teams already guaranteed a place in the final, one would imagine that there would not be a lot to play for the two sides in the match at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi today. However, with the new personnel hoping to impress their coaches before the final, the match turned out to be not as dull affair as one anticipated.
Syria were easily the better side on the day, and were rewarded for their early endeavour with a goal in the 18th minute from midfielder Ali Dyab. A free kick taken from the left wing was poorly marked in the Indian penalty area, and Ali Dyab ghosted in to slot home
India came closest to finding an equalizer in the seond half with substitute Pradeep hitting the crossbar. Coach Bob Houghton brought on Delhi striker Sunil Chetri for a late charge at the Syrian defence, and Chetri should have done better with what turned out to be the last action of the match, but his effort was gobbled up by the Syrian goalkeeper.
