It is not a clash but confusion whether Steve Harper be the main goalkeeper or Shay Given. The two players are in great form and people though that Given has replaced Harper but with the new deal of Harper, there is a doubt whether this new extension of deal will affect the stay of Given in the club.

Steve Harper, 33-year-old, has been playing in the club since 1993 when he joined the club from Seaham Red Star and he had already made 111 appearances for Newcastle. This is a very rare case in the history of club football as players use to shift from one club to another.

In some of the recent matches, he has been replaced by Shay Given and people thought that his stay in the club is vague but now the opposite may happen. But the boss of the club, Chris Hughton, said that his new contract does not have any relation with the stay of Shay Given.

Harper said:

“I’m a north-east lad and United has always been a huge part of my life and I’m delighted that will continue. At the end of this contract I will have been at Newcastle for 19 seasons, which is more than half of my life. I’m delighted it’s sorted and now I can concentrate on doing what I have always done, which is working hard in training and pushing my claims for regular first-team football.”

Chris Hughton:

“Steve is very popular individual with the squad, staff and supporters. But more importantly, he is a quality goalkeeper. He never lets anybody down. The only thing to read into it is that we’d like to keep the quality individuals here. We’ve never seen Steve Harper as a number two - we’ve seen him as a keeper who is pushing hard for a number one spot. Unfortunately he has a top keeper in Shay Given in front of him.”
