Everyone knows Scottish clubs are not in good position and also they are facing some financial problems too. Many top Scottish clubs failed to qualify for the Champion League and some clubs struggled in the UEFA Cup. Meanwhile, there was a case of media backlash over the poor showing of Scottish clubs in European competition and the SPL warned the media for the incident.
Celtic was out of the Champion League at the hands of Aalborg. Two famous Scottish clubs (Motherwell and Queen) struggled for in the UEFA Cup and Rangers didn’t qualify for the Champions League. But the SPL still shows hope to the clubs saying that they are still within the top 10 countries of European competition.
In comparison with the last year, this year has very low performance of Scottish clubs. Last season, Rangers reached the final of the UEFA clubs and Celtic also survived well up to the very last moment of Champion League. But this season, not a single Scottish clubs could manage to win both in home and away.
What SPL says about the situation:
“Our co-efficient is based on a five-year rolling average, so it is important not to overreact to one poor season. Last season our clubs had a terrific run in Europe, the best performance for 25 years. So by these recent standards it has been a poor season for Scottish clubs. We are 10th in the rankings for next season, which gives our champions direct entry into the group stages of the Champions League. Staying in the top 12 is vital for this. As part of that we are keen to resolve the ongoing issue of the Scottish Cup runners-up qualifying for Europe at the expense of a place gained via league performance.”
